Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. It's one of the most recognisable gemstones in the world. Its colour comes from tiny traces of iron and natural radiation deep underground. That gives it a lovely range, from soft lilac to deep, wine-like purple. People have loved it for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks even linked it to a calm, clear head, and it's the birthstone for February. Most amethyst comes from Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia. Because it grows in big, clean crystals, lovely stones are pretty easy to find without spending a lot.
With a Mohs hardness of 7, amethyst is tough enough for everyday rings, bracelets and necklaces. To keep the colour vivid, keep it out of strong sunlight for long stretches and away from harsh chemicals. A gentle clean with warm, soapy water is all it needs. Genuine natural amethyst is pretty easy to find, so there's rarely a reason to settle for dyed glass or a synthetic. A trusted seller and a fair price are usually your best clues that it's the real thing.
